Macaque Monkeys (Snow Monkeys) | Japan
The Macaque monkeys of Japan are among the most famous and iconic primates in the world. These monkeys are native to the islands of Japan, where they thrive in diverse habitats, from subtropical forests to the cold, snow-covered mountains of the country’s northern regions. They are a unique and captivating part of Japan’s natural heritage, admired for their intelligence, resilience, and social dynamics. The sight of these fascinating creatures - especially in the landscapes of Nagano Prefecture - made for a unique photography opportunity.
The collection of images below were captured in the Jigokudani Monkey Park in Nagano Prefecture which is home to one of the most well-known populations of snow monkeys, where they can be seen relaxing in the naturally heated onsen (hot spring baths) that have become a symbol of their resilience and adaptability.
